Historic pub in Liverpool

The restaurant "The North Western - JD Wetherspoon" in Liverpool, England, is an outstanding example of the well-known British pub chain JD Wetherspoon and is one of the most popular locations in the city. It is situated in close proximity to the bustling Liverpool Lime Street Station and is housed in an impressive, grade II listed building that was originally constructed as the North Western Hotel in 1871 by the London and North Western Railway. This historic building, designed by the renowned architect Alfred Waterhouse, remained largely unused after its closure in the 1930s until it was partially converted into student accommodation in the 1990s. Later, Wetherspoon took over the ground floor and transformed it into a modern pub after a comprehensive renovation, while still retaining its historical charm.

Wetherspoon restaurant reviews

The interior of "The North Western" is a true highlight. With an investment of several million pounds, the interior has been meticulously restored, preserving many original details such as high ceilings, wooden paneling, and spacious areas. The pub spans two floors and offers numerous seating options, from cozy corners to large table groups. Particularly striking is the decoration featuring historical photos and artifacts that pay homage to the building's railway history. A highlight is the rooftop terrace on the upper floor, which offers an unusual view of the surroundings and is a popular spot for relaxation on warm days. The atmosphere is lively yet inviting—typical of a Wetherspoon pub that attracts both travelers and locals.

Culinary offerings at "The North Western" provide the classic Wetherspoon experience with a focus on British pub cuisine and a wide selection of drinks. Popular dishes include fish and chips, known for its crispy batter and succulent fish, making it a true crowd-pleaser. The Flaming Dragon Curry also stands out—a spicy, fiery dish that delights lovers of heat. For beer enthusiasts, the selection of real ales and craft beers is a significant plus, featuring local varieties that complement the offerings. Service is another aspect that distinguishes "The North Western." Staff are often praised for their friendliness and efficiency, although the pub can get very busy due to its location and size. Orders are typically placed at the bar, with food being brought to the table afterward—a typical feature of the chain that ensures speed. However, during peak times, there may be waiting times, which reflects the high demand. For added convenience, there is an app that allows guests to order food and drinks directly from their table, making the visit even more relaxed.

I went there to get a soup after a long day. That’s the first ever Wetherspoon I've been to that doesn't offer it.

Travelled here for a football game pre drinks/food. My son travelled via train from York Uni and it was a great meeting place! Food and drinks were really good. A very vibrant place on match days

Food was cold and dry with missing ingredients which we later found out were not in stock (but it would have been nice to know that before we ordered). We asked to speak to a manager twice, but they did not come the first time. By the time we had received a refund we had been sitting for an hour and 10 minutes and all we got out of the experience was two drinks, a few cold onion rings and misery at a dirty table. (We still had to pay for the onion rings and drinks .)

Food took ages at this one staff were young and rude service was not upto scratch compared to other JD weatherspoons. Food was also cold and sausages undercooked. Clearly rushing as I complained about the length of time waiting for a basic meal.
